Our Story

2013
Parents at Wivelsfield Green Primary School started asking why there wasn't a fireworks night in the village for local children. Fireworks nights were held on the village green many years before, and Sussex has a rich history of bonfire societies in many towns and villages close by, including of course Lewes. A small group decided to take action, and the Wivelsfield Bonfire Society was formed at the end of 2013.
2014
The first Wivelsfield Big Bang was held in 2014 at the local primary school for 500 people. The aim was for it to be a safe environment for families with young children to enjoy the show.

2015-Present
The Big Bang has grown and become better year on year, with more fireworks with music, bonfire stalls and entertainment during the evening. Around 900 people attended in 2019.

In support of this event, we support and run a number of fundraising activities during the year, which has been difficult in 2020 and 2021 but has included:
* The bar at the church fete and village day *
* Race Nights *
* Barn Dance *
* Murder Mystery Evening *

All money raised during the year goes towards the costs of staging the fireworks night, and helps to subsidize the ticket prices.
